Regional Campus Spotlight
Patrick Munhall, assistant professor of psychology, Lancaster In his letter of application to Ohio University Lancaster Campus, Patrick Munhall stated “teaching and interacting with students on research projects is my first passion.” That passion was recognized recently when he was named an Outstanding Regional Higher Education Professor from among the University’s five regional campuses. The award closely followed Munhall’s promotion to Associate Professor of Psychology. During his five years on the Lancaster Campus Munhall has demonstrated his commitment to what happens in the classroom, according to Ken Heineman, Professor of History, who nominated his colleague. “His excellence in teaching and in scholarship, his collaboration with colleagues at other universities, his record of publishing, securing grants for developing new technology for classroom instruction … and then consider his service on committees, and his logic and good humor.” He and colleagues received an Ohio University 1804 Grant to fund handheld feedback remotes to use as student responders in teaching psychology 101 classes. Munhall’s concern for students extends beyond the classroom. He also teamed with Candice Thomas-Maddox and Leigh Atkinson to lead the First Year Experience at the Pickerington Center. The program assists students in their transition to college with a series of curricular and co-curricular sessions throughout their first year. Students recognized Munhall’s teaching excellence in 2007 with the Phi Theta Kappa Professor of the Year Award. He appreciates the priority the Campus places on students and facilitating their success. “I love what I do and t hat is really the result of the students and everyone here at OUL that make this a rewarding and enjoyable place to learn and grow as a person.” Munhall has presented at many national and international conferences and his research has been published in numerous psychology and social psychology journals. Selection committee members noted Munhall’s publication record as well as his ‘exemplary faculty leadership.’ He served on the University’s Provost Search Committee and continues to serve on the Quarter to Semester Committee, Faculty Senate and on numerous committees on the Lancaster Campus. An OHIO alumnus thrice over, he received his doctorate in experimental psychology in 2002.
