Regional Campus Spotlight Featuring outstanding acheivements and recognitions of excellence by regional campus faculty, staff and students. Jerry Westgerdes, professor of art, Zanesville Gerald Westgerdes will be one of twelve featured artists at the Carnegie Center of the Arts in Three Rivers, MI. The exhibit, “The Visual Art of Love and Forgiveness Exhibit,”runs August 22 to October 17, 2010. His pieces, “Josephs Coat” and “Prodigal Son” will on display. Frank LoSchiavo, associate professor in psychology, Zanesville Campus Frank LoSchiavo is recognized by both his students and his colleagues for his passion for teaching. He has been named a 2010 Regional Higher Education Outstanding Professor. Zanesville Dean James Fonseca said LoSchiavo’s scholarly articles are often related to his first love, that of teaching. “Someone who writes about humor in the classroom is someone I want to take a course from!” Fonseca stated in a letter supporting LoSchiavo’s nomination. “Many of our students do so and they learn immensely in his classes while enjoying learning at the hands of a master.” Read more...Scott Minar, professor of English, Lancaster Campus Scott Minar has been compared to the Pied Piper of education because he is often seen in the hallways of campus trailed by enthusiastic students. He has been named a 2010 Regional Higher Education Outstanding Professor. “He challenges and excites students about his subject,” John Furlow, dean of the Lancaster Camspus, said. “The campus committee that nominated him recognized his many positive efforts on behalf of students and his efforts to make the Lancaster Campus a better place for faculty and for learning.” Read more...Nila Klaiber, human services technology student, Chillicothe Taking a poignant look at the aging process, Nila Klaiber has won the Chillicothe Campus winter quarter writing contest for her personal narrative, “The Disaster of Growing Older.” “It is a tongue-in-cheek title for a story that compares the life I led when I was in my 20s to my current life in my 40s,” said Klaiber, a human services technology major from Marion, Ohio. Terry Barricklow, maintenance repair specialist, Eastern Terry Barricklow, a maintenance repair specialist at the Eastern Campus, was recently featured in the international magazine, Toy Farmer. Barricklow can be found almost every weekend at an auction, farm toy show, or flea market taking part in his 25-year hobby of farm toy collecting. That hobby – and his finding of a rare toy set – made him the topic of an article in the international magazine. Read more...
Barbara Mahaffey, assistant professor and coordinator of Human Services Technology , Chillicothe In recognition of her ability to mentor and inspire students, Ohio University-Chillicothe faculty member Barbara Mahaffey has earned the Training and Mentorship Award from the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. The award recognizes the contribution of an IAMFC member whose role as a trainer and mentor has helped to ensure the future of the family-counseling profession. She was recognized during a luncheon at the American Counseling Association's conference March 20. Read more... Terri Hood-Brown, assistant professor of nursing, Chillicothe Ohio University-Chillicothe nursing faculty member Terri Hood-Brown had an opportunity to grow, both professionally and personally, during a recent mission trip to India. Hood-Brown, assistant professor of nursing, travelled to southern India from Feb. 10 through Feb. 20 with Care India, a faith-based non-profit organization.
Miki Crawford co-authored the recently published book, Japanese War Brides in America: An Oral History.
Charles Savage receives University System of Ohio Faculty Innovator Award In order to award and stimulate the creation of innovative, affordable instructional materials for students in the University System of Ohio, Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut has created the University System of Ohio Faculty Innovator Awards. Charles Savage, assistant professor of music at Ohio University Zanesville Campus, was chosen as one of eleven Ohio Faculty Innovators for 2009. He received a $1,000 cash award for using technological innovation to reduce the cost of textbooks to students and was recognized by Governor Strickland at an event at the Ohio Board of Regents Office in Columbus. Patrick Munhall named Outstanding Regional Higher Education Professor In his letter of application to Ohio University Lancaster Campus, Patrick Munhall stated “teaching and interacting with students on research projects is my first passion.” That passion was recognized recently when he was named an Outstanding Regional Higher Education Professor from among the University’s five regional campuses. The award closely followed Munhall’s promotion to Associate Professor of Psychology. Read more... Vicky Parker recognized as Ross County Nurse of the Year Vicky Parker was recognized as the 2009 Ross County Nurse of the Year by the Ross District Nurses Association.
