Research is a critical component to faculty tenure at Ohio University-Zanesville. Faculty like Mohannad AL-Saghir, assistant professor of biological sciences at OU Zanesville, recognize the importance of staying active in his field of research to encouraging his students to get engaged in lifelong learning.
The project involved researching a rapid and Efficient Method of Genomic DNA Extraction from Pistachio Trees. AL-Saghir extracted genomic DNA from 12 pistachio trees. The results showed that a modified protocol could produce a sufficient amount of DNA with high quality as confirmed by the purity index values of the samples.
The finding adds to the body of knowledge surrounding the development of an efficient protocol that can be easily adjusted for other species. AL-Saghir’s ongoing interest in enhancing research methodologies is just one example of the hands-on approach he takes not only with his own scholarship, but with his students as he engages them in various research projects as part of their undergraduate college education.
