Viola and Piano concert at Zanesville

By Chris Shaw
Nov. 4, 2010

Kenichiro (Ken) and Tanya Matsuda will visit Ohio University Zanesville for an evening of entertainment on Tues., Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Elson Hall Auditorium.

Violist and native of Japan, Kenichiro Matsuda and his wife, pianist and Fremont native, Tanya Matsuda, will present an engaging musical performance featuring Vieuxtemps, Elgar, Bloch, Tanaka, Schumann, Hindemith, Kirkpatrick, Leibensperger, and Rachmaninoff.

The pair will grace the stage with their musical talents on viola and piano and will provide information about the music and composers between the pieces.

“I guarantee that the audience will enjoy,” Ken Matsuda said. “I think it will be very interesting for them.”

Ken Matsuda came to the United States in 1977 after three and a half year with the New Japan Philharmonic in Tokyo.  He attended Kunitachi Music College, Tokyo, and Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, where he received his M.M. and B.M.  Ken was a member of the Grant Park Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, and Buffalo Philharmonic before joining the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in 1987.

Tanya Matsuda was born in Fremont, Ohio and began studying piano at age seven.  She grew up in a family of seven where all of her siblings studied music.  She went on to study at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Northern Illinois University (NIU) in DeKalb, Illinois and spent her summers studying at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.  She completed her M.M. and B. M. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at NIU.

The community is invited to attend this free performance sponsored by the Ohio University Zanesville Cultural Committee on Tuesday, November 9, at 7 p.m. in the Elson Hall Auditorium. Earlier in the day, the Matsuda’s will visit Mark Haven’s orchestra class at Zanesville High School. Ohio University Zanesville is a proud supporter of the arts in the community.
