Third Thursday event features Chaplin's Charlie Chaplin made the statement in his autobiography that, “I was full of the idea of going to America, not alone for the thrill and adventure of it, but because it would mean renewed hope, a new beginning in a new world.” Dr. Lisa Stein, assistant professor of English at Ohi o UniversityZanesville, will present “Charlie Chaplin and His New Beginning in a New World” featuring remembrances from Charlie’s first visit to America in October 1910. The 100th anniversary of that visit also is being commemorated at the “Charlie in the Heartland” conference, to be held October 28-30 on the Zanesville campus. Indeed, Chaplin’s first visit to the U.S. proved to be life-changing. By 1915, a year that marked his second film contract, Chaplin had taken America and the world by storm. That year came to be known as the year of “Chaplinitis,” one that was accompanied by an explosion of merchandise, musical and filmic representation of Chaplin’s lovable screen character, the Little Tramp. Perhaps Chaplin had some inkling in 1910 of his future success, for he later claimed that the chance to go to the United States was exactly what he needed at the time. "In England I felt I had reached the limit of my prospects; besides, my opportunities there were circumscribed. With scant educational background, if I failed as a music-hall comedian, I would have little chance to do menial work. In the States the prospects were brighter.” “Charlie Chaplin and His New Beginning in a New World” takes place on Thursday, October 21, at Zanesville’s Elson Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m. as part of the campus’ Third Thursday event series and light refreshments will be served. Third Thursday events are free and open to the public.
