Zanesville Campus Library encourages community engagement

By Christine Shaw
Dec 7, 2010

Food DriveThe Zanesville Campus Library at Ohio University-Zanesville and Zane State College is giving back to the community in a big way this year! Led by Emily Paul, the Friends for Literary Improvement (FLI) Student Group has undertaken three projects to help those in need or who are serving our country.

The group’s main charity this year is The Salvation Army where Zanesville Campus Library staff, students, and their families spent the day ringing the bell at Sam’s Club. Those involved included Zach Humphrey, Mekenzie Denton, Amy and Cary Underwood, Rainer Frueh, Charli Davison, Katie Berridge, Mike Wutzler,  Tony and Jen Hopkins, Janelle Hubble, Emily Paul, and Tracey Humphrey.

In addition there was a friendly competition among student groups to gather non-perishable food items. In 2009 the group collected 840 items and this year they are well on their way to surpassing that number. Alan, Dusty and Andy Punches; Maggie Goetz; Jackie Forshey; Mike Wultzer; Janelle Hubble; Emily Paul; Tracey and Zach Humphrey; Jerry and Marilyn Westgerdes; Amy and Cary Underwood and Samantha Auxter all of Zanesville; Rosanna St Clair, Kathy Normansell, Cindy Oliver, and Sandra Christman of New Concord; and Kim and Blair Border of Dresden will help other Salvation Army volunteers box the food for families in need.

The Friends for Literary Improvement have also adopted a platoon for the holidays through the “Adopt a Platoon” program. They are providing a bit of holiday cheer by sending holiday cards and items to the troops. Anyone interested in donating signed generic holiday cards, lap quilts, Christmas candy or supplies like baby wipes, toothpaste, deodorant and other nonperishable toiletries may contact Tracey Humphrey at 740-588-1405. The package will be sent out on Monday, December 13, so please act fast.

The Library staff is also active in supporting Special Olympics. The Humphreys, along with Emily Pau,l are volunteering at the Special Olympics in Columbus, Ohio, on December 18. “We (FLI) had a truly remarkable experience volunteering at the 2010 Summer Games. We would like to encourage all student groups to support the Special Olympics,” Paul said.

In addition to providing academic library services to the students of Ohio University Zanesville and Zane State College, the Friends for Literary Improvement and Zanesville Campus Library staff are caring advocates for community service.
