Southern Campus holds community block party
By Pamela Wise
August 27, 2010
The air was filled with music and the smell of burgers on the grill at Southern campus’ Shafer Courtyard on Aug. 13. The Office of Student Services hosted a block party for the community and prospective students to promote the upcoming start of fall quarter.
To break the ice, literally, student ambassadors assisted with a frozen t-shirt contest. Participants raced to be the first one to break into blocks of ice with t-shirts frozen inside. The first to get his shirt out of the ice and put it on over existing clothing was Paul Walker, an adult student from Ironton. His son Isaac cheered him on. Other activities included campus tours, corn hole and ping pong tournaments, a water balloon toss and live entertainment. Singer Cat Cirner and Southern student Seth Dixon were followed by local girl band 4-Mile, which performed for the crowd.
“This is a great opportunity for the community and the university to connect,” said Robert Pleasant, director of student services. “Many of our residents have never visited the campus and this gave them the opportunity to meet with us in a relaxing, fun environment.” Pleasant added that advisors at the recruitment table were busy throughout the evening answering questions about degree offerings and financial-aid.

Local radio and television stations were at the event interviewing staff and students. Sarah Kyllo, student services specialist at the Proctorville Center informed WKEE listeners of the new CISCO classes offered there this fall.
