Author to Discuss Schnormeier Gardens: Peace, Harmony and Serenity

By Jennifer LaRue
May 5, 2011

Peace. Harmony. Serenity. These are gifts that gardens give, according to Ted and Ann Schnormeier, who have created 75 acres of gardens near Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

Author Scot Long will discuss the gardens and his book Schnormeier Gardens: Peace, Harmony & Serenity during the annual meeting of the Friends of the Library, Ohio University Lancaster, Wednesday, May 11, 7 p.m., in the Raymond Wilkes Gallery for the Visual Arts, at the local campus.

Upon completion of their Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home about 15 years ago, the Schnormeiers began developing what Long describes as an Asian stroll garden in the heart of Ohio. He describes the creative process integrating Chinese and Japanese culture. Long also includes the history of the gardens’ development and a visual journey through the four seasons.

The Schnormeiers use color, texture, art, ponds, waterfalls, and many vignettes to create what Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel magazine rates as one of the top ten garden destinations in the world.

Long, an anthropologist specializing in cultural ecology, earned his doctorate at the Ohio State University and worked as a research associate for Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster. He completed nine articles for the West Virginia Encyclopedia and previously served as associate editor of Farmweek Newspaper in Knightstown, Indiana. Long is an instructor at Central Ohio Technical College and resides near Mt. Vernon.

The presentation on Schnormeier Gardens is free and open to public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library at Ohio University Lancaster. Refreshments also will be served.

The Friends of the Library formed 26 years ago to increase the community’s awareness of the Hannah V. McCauley Library’s resources and facilities and to strengthen the Library’s resources for scholarly research and learning. Friends have access to the full range of the HVML’s collections and services, including research databases, and a card providing access to OhioLINK and interlibrary loan borrowing.
