Summer School? Oh, yeah, when it’s Kids in College

By Jennifer LaRue
April 5, 2010

If “Baby Diapers, Slime, Rainbows and Roller Coasters” aren’t your things, maybe “Flying Art” holds more appeal. These are just two of the many courses to explore this suKids in College 2009 Participantsmmer during Kids in College at Ohio University Lancaster Campus.

Kids in College, now in its 31st  year, is especially designed for children completing grades three through eight, and will be held in week-long sessions June 14-18 and 21-25, and June 28- July 2.

According to Kids in College coordinator Maryann Lape, students may enroll for one, two, or all three weeks, for a morning class or an afternoon class, or both.  The morning session begins at 9:30 and concludes at 11:30.  Afternoon classes are scheduled 12:30-2:30 p.m. Students taking both and morning and afternoon sessions may bring sack lunches and eat in the student lounge.  The Zone food service, coordinated by Fairfield County Developmental Disabilities and Fairfield Industries, will offer hot, kid-friendly lunch items for sale.

Class sizes are small, with emphasis on individual instruction. Many of the Campus facilities are devoted to KIC for the duration of the program, Lape noted. Classes are offered in labs, the gymnasium, ceramics studio, weight room, dance studio and theatre.

“Offering new courses each summer is a challenge,” said Lape, who wants to offer new options to returning students. She credits suggestions from students and parents, as well as the creativity of the instructors, for this year’s exciting mix of courses. New courses this year include:
