Lancaster Honors Convocation Sets Record

By Jennifer LaRue
June 24, 2010

A year of record enrollment concluded with a capacity crowd for Honors Convocation on June 11 in the gymnasium of Brasee Hall. Dean John Furlow called it a memorable graduation as he looked out over the crowd.

Becky Brooks, 2009 PTK Professor of the Year and Deaf studies instructor, gave the commencement address. In describing herself as a lifelong student, Brooks said her journey began 17 years ago, with the goal of earning her doctorate by age 40. She then noted the days and hours until she reaches that goal. As she talked about American Sign Language and transliteration, Brooks gave the graduates one last assignment.

“Find a way to make a difference. Volunteer. Learn another culture," she challenged. "One person can make a difference. Together we can do great things.”

Several other recognitions were announced during the event.

Cathy Bitler, who earned baccalaureate and graduate degrees from OHIO, received the Ohio University Lancaster Campus Alumni Leadership Award.

Representing the students, Phi Theta Kappa chapter vice president Karah Mokas spoke, describing her involvement in events with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, dinners for the shelter, caroling and the flower sale as “PTK experiences she wouldn’t change for anything.” Scott Minar receives RHE Outstanding Professor recognition

Scott Minar, Professor of English, was named a 2010 Regional Higher Education Outstanding Professor.

Phi Theta Kappa public relations officer Sarah Myers announced the 2010 PTK Professor of the Year, Janet Becker, associate professor of accounting.

“This professor has excellent teaching skills, is concerned for students and their achievements, is available to students, spends long hours in preparation for class, stays current in her profession, and goes to extra effort to make complicated material more understood.”

Earlier in the ceremony student speaker, Mokas, had thanked Becker for the attention she has given as a teacher.

“She made me feel like I was her only priority,” Mokas said of Becker.
