EMT-Paramedic Training Program at Lancaster Campus Re-certified The Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P) Training Academy at Ohio University Lancaster Campus, now in its fifth year, has been re-certified by the State of Ohio, Department of Public Safety, EMS. The certification is important, according to coordinators Maryann Lape and Mike Smith, because students who complete the program may sit for the National Registry Exam, following an assessment of their clinical skills. Instructors and students represent fire and medic departments and units in Fairfield and surrounding counties. Students take courses in anatomy and physiology, the role of the paramedic, patient assessment, trauma, airway management, and cardiac care. Smith also noted the invaluable clinical experiences students gain, particularly at Fairfield Medical Center and other local sites. Instructors in the program include Jeffrey Bevan, Sharon Boll, Chris Evrard, Joe Farmer, Steve Maffin, Slade Schultz, Brian Smith, Michael Smith, and Ruth Varner. Thomas Vajen, M.D., is the program’s medical director. To qualify for acceptance into the program, students must be certified in EMT – Basic, pass an exam and complete the interview process. Testing begins April 5 at the Lancaster Campus. The Learning and Career Center at the Lancaster Campus also will offer the EMT – Basic course May 4 through July 2, meeting Tuesday and Thursday evenings and all day on Saturdays. The next EMT – Paramedic course, which meets Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and some Saturdays, commences September 7. Anyone interested in either class should contact Maryann Lape at 654.6711, ext. 249, or via e-mail at lape@ohio.edu.
