Wheeling Symphony String Quartet concert
The public is invited to the second event in the Dean’s Cultural Series at Ohio University Eastern Campus. This free event will feature the Wheeling Symphony String Quintet on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in the Shannon Hall theater. A reception will follow the event. This concert is part of the Wheeling Symphony Society’s MUSIC in Our Neighborhoods project. Through funding from National Endowment for the Arts, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the MUSIC in Our Neighborhoods project is taking chamber ensembles into Wheeling communities to further the mission of the symphony and provide jobs for musicians who have lost work due to the economic downturn. This is not the first time a project has formed to aid musicians who have lost jobs. The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra was established in 1929 to provide work for local musicians who lost jobs when silent pictures became “talkies.” The founders recognized that live music must not be lost in our community. The same holds true today. For 80 years, the Wheeling Symphony Society has been driven by its mission “to serve the residents of our communities by providing excellent orchestral programs which entertain, educate and enhance the quality of life.” Four chamber ensembles-String Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Brass Quintet and Percussion Ensemble-are providing free performances for schools, universities, colleges and others as part of the MUSIC in Our Neighborhoods program. “We are honored to partner with the Wheeling Symphony Society, specifically the String Quintet, to help bring more music to the local area,” said Dr. Rich Greenlee, Eastern Campus dean. “Through the Cultural Series at the Eastern Campus, we want to give people the opportunity that they may not otherwise have to experience cultural events. We recognize, along with the founders of the symphony, that music should not be lost in our community even in difficult economic times.” The String Quintet will perform works from the string quartet literature by Haydn without contrabass and add the lower bass part for Mozart chamber music. They also have programmed some Broadway and pops music for this performance. The String Quintet is made up of the following musicians: Bohdan Subchak, violin I; Anne Jackovic, violin II; Jennifer Gerhard, viola; Elisa Kahanski, cello; and Jeffrey T. Mangone, Sr., contrabass. Gerhard, Kahanski and Mangone are Wheeling Symphony principal players, while Subchak and Jackovic are violin I section musicians. “We invite everyone to join us for this evening of music, to be entertained, and to forget their worries, if only for an hour,” said Greenlee.
