Gerald Van Scyoc to show artwork at Ohio University Eastern Campus gallery

By E.J. Schodzinski
April 13, 2011

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (April 13, 2011) – Cadiz artist, Gerald Van Scyoc, will be exhibiting his work at the Ohio University Eastern Campus’ art gallery April 18 through May 19. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, April 21 from 6pm – 8pm. The exhibit, “Gerald Van Scyoc: In Widescreen,” will showcase his talents in dramatic painting.

“I have my own unique approach to painting,” said Van Scyoc. “My personal goal is for my artwork to elicit a strong emotional response from the viewer. These emotions may range from anger to joy to sadness. I want the viewer to not only see the paintings, but to feel them too.”

The Van Scyoc exhibit features several “widescreen” paintings that contain a cinematic reality, or dramatic realism which permeates their subject matter. For example, one of the paintings, “Fallen Bullfighter,” seems to take place at the height of emotional drama. “I really tried to capture the “cinematic moment” with this painting, and many of the others that will be displayed at OHIO’s Eastern Campus,” said Van Scyoc.

Van Scyoc’s work has been shown in both individual and group shows in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia since 1993. Venues include Pittsburgh Center for the Art; Stifel Fine Arts Center, Wheeling, West Virginia; Three Rivers Arts Festival, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio.

Van Scyoc credits his diverse educational background as a major influence on his artwork. He studied painting at West Virginia University, film at Wright State University, film and television at New York University, and graphic design at Sinclair Community College.

The Ohio University Eastern Campus art gallery is open to the public and admission is free. The art gallery is located on the second floor of Shannon Hall.
