Eastern Theater Presents "Inventing Van Gogh"

By Crystal Lorimor
May 12, 2010

The Theater Department of Ohio University Eastern Campus will close its 2009—2010 season with Steven Dietz’s haunting drama “Inventing Van Gogh.”  Performances are scheduled for May 13- 15 and 20- 22 in the Shannon Hall Theater.  Thursday evening performances begin at 7 p.m. with all seats $4; Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m. with general admission tickets $6 and senior citizen and student discount tickets $4.

“Inventing Van Gogh” is the story of the final Van Gogh portrait, painted just before the artist’s death, which has never been seen. Until now.  Patrick Stone, a contemporary painter, is hired to forge the final masterpiece and finds himself squaring off, across the years, with Van Gogh himself.  The result is a compelling mystery about the obsession to create and the fine line that separates truth from myth.

The cast includes: Renno Barnes of St. Clairsville as Patrick Stone - Barnes, a senior at Ohio University Eastern Campus, was last seen as Frederick in “Noises Off”. Playing Vincent Van Gogh is Paul Aragon of Triadelphia.  Aragon was last seen in “The Battle of Shallowford”.  In the role of Dr. Gachet is freshman Josh DeBeni of Bridgeport.  He was last seen as Selsdon in “Noises Off”. Sable Vance, a freshman from Morristown, is cast as Hallie Miller. Playing Marguerite Gachet is Lacey Matheny of Triadelphia. In the role of Rene Bouchard is Ohio University Eastern Campus history instructor, Charles Smith.  Smith was last seen in “The Comedy of Errors”.  Playing Paul Gauguin is Ben DeStefano of Bellaire.  He was last seen as Clunette in “The Battle of Shallowford”.  The production is directed by Dennis S. Fox.

“Inventing Van Gogh” contains mature themes and brief strong language.
