Margaret McAdams to show artwork at Eastern Campus gallery

By E.J. Schodzinski
Sept. 13, 2010

Chillicothe artist, Margaret McAdams, will exhibit her work at Ohio University Eastern Campus’ art gallery Sept. 17 through Oct. 27.  The exhibit, “Ancient Mysteries and Majesties,” will showcase her talents in photography, drawing, and painting.

“The photographs, drawings, and paintings in this exhibit comprise a selection of images produced through a 10 year study and exploration of Neolithic stone sites and old growth foreMcAdams art: Shadows and Snow

sts,” McAdams said. “Throughout time, humans have used stones to make tools and shelters and to mark sacred spaces and burial chambers.  The symbolic significance of stones is seen in Native American, Peruvian, Columbian, Australian Aborigine, Indian European, and ancient Egyptian folklore and artifacts.”

The McAdams exhibit also features gelatin silver prints of megalithic sites and  photography of trees in California, North Carolina, Ohio, Martha’s Vineyard, EMcAdams art: Tall Tree Grovengland, France, and Nova Scotia.

“For many years, I have included trees or parts of trees in my artwork –from paintings and drawings to photographs and installations,” McAdams added. “Trees manifest both the strength and fragility of nature and suggest power and immortality.Within the photographs, trees are powerful visual art forms – naturalistically, symbolically, and aesthetically.  To me, they are metaphors for ourselves.”

McAdams earned a Bachelor of Creative Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master of Fine Arts in multi-media and painting from Washington University in St. Louis.  McAdams has been faculty at Ohio University Chillicothe Campus since 1990, being  promoted to professor in 2001.  In 2006, she received Ohio University’s Regional Campus Outstanding Professor Award.

A multi-disciplined artist, McAdams’ artworks have been shown in over two hundred juried and invitational shows internationally, nationally, and regionally.  Venues include the Ohio Craft Museum; Atkinson Gallery, Southport, England; the French Art ColonMcAdams art: Ty ar Chorriket Francey; Virginia Intermont College; and the Southern Illinois University Art Museum.  In 2005, she was awarded an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship in Photography.  Since 2002, her ceramic works have received awards in nine juried exhibitions.

The Ohio University Eastern Campus art gallery is open to the public and admission is free.  The art gallery is located on the second floor of Shannon Hall.
