Student Photographer Makes Debut at
Ohio University Eastern Campus Gallery

By Crystal Lorimor
Jan 29, 2010

For the first time, a current student's work is being featured in a solo exhibition at Ohio University's Eastern Campus art gallery , until Feb. 4. The artist and photographer, Caleb Jackson, was honored with a reception on Jan. 14 to open the exhibit. Gallery hours are MPhotography by Caleb Jacksononday through Thursday, noon – 6 p.m.

"As I walk through the forest with my camera in hand, I attempt to capture anything to show others what God has given my eyes to see and interpret," said Jackson, a Martin's Ferry resident. "I want to display to everyone what He has put here for us to watch over and enjoy."

Jackson, a Martins Ferry resident and current history major at Ohio University Eastern Campus, "started taking pictures about three years ago after I saw the movie 'Wild America'." He has since taken photography courses at the university to learn new skills.

Jackson's first one-man gallery show, "The Beauty of Nature," is a collection of photographs he's taken of wild animals, flowers, and landscapes. From a close-up view of a bear's paw, bees on a honeycomb, and a spider spinning a web to a mushroom in the woods and a dead leaf almost floating on the green grass, Jackson explores various aspects of nature around us. The ordinary turns extraordinary through his lens.

Although majoring in history, Jackson said he started taking pictures about three years ago after watching the movie "Wild America." He has since taken photography courses at the university to learn new skills. Photography instructor Dr. Michael Kaiser said Jackson has worked hard to hone his craft.

"He is not afraid of work – he is persistent," Kaiser said. "He approaches his subject with the knowledge that he may have to try over and over to get just the image he wants. He has patience. He has drive.

"He is not a photographer who catches the subPhotography by Caleb Jacksonject in one shot," Kaiser added. "He stalks and shoots and shoots until he catches that instant. He works like a professional."

Jackson sees his photography as a way to give others the chance to behold and delight in the world of nature, as he does.

"I have always had a very deep fascination with nature and the world around me," Jackson said. "The sheer beauty amazes me. From the time I was barely four years old, my grandfather taught me to love and respect nature for its unrefined power and grace. But as I grew older, I began to realize that nature's elegance should be admired because I feel it truly is a gift from God."

Jackson is a history major at Ohio University Eastern Campus. He would like to become a nature photographer, but plans to enter a master's program after graduation that will allow him to teach history in high school – just in case his photography doesn't work out. His hopes also include continuing to share his view of nature with others.

"My dream is to take a cross country road trip with my brothers to show people what they’re missing all throughout America," Jackson said. "After America, I would love to travel all over the world and do the same thing."
