Quilting Exhibit Held at Eastern Campus Art Gallery

By Crystal Lorimor
Feb 4, 2010

The quilt show, “Celebrating Milestones by the Piecing of Fabric,” will be on display at Ohio University Eastern Campus’ art gallery Monday, Feb. 15 – Thursday, March 11.  A reception to honor the artist, Cindy Greenlee, will be held Feb. 25, 6-8 p.m. Quilt by Cindy Greenlee

The art gallery is open Monday-Thursday, 10am-6pm. Admission is free.

Greenlee first became interested in quilts over 30 years ago when she became fascinated with the “simple patterns, bold colors and intricate craftsmanship” of Amish quilts.  “After reading the book, Plain and Simple: A Woman’s Journey to the Amish, by Sue Bender, I very much related to the author who described her life as a ‘crazy quilt’,” said Greenlee.  “At that time in my life, I was a busy Mom with two kids, a husband and a nursing career, and life got pretty hectic at times.”  She found herself with not enough time to do all the things she wanted to do – just like many other people today – and learned that occasionally one has to ask, “What really matters?”

For Greenlee, the answer is family.  So, she started combining her first priority, family, with her new found interest of quilts.

Her mother taught her to sew when she was a young girl, so she took that knowledge, some books about quilting, “lots of trial and error” and taught herself how to quilt.  She began “making quilts for different milestones in my husband’s, children’s, siblings’, nieces’, and nephews’ lives,” said Greenlee. “My quilts were made for important birthdays, weddings, births, anniversaries, and a few ‘just because’.”

“For me, the best part of quilting is the peace that comes with sewing in solitude.  The hardest part of quilting is finding the time to do it!”
