Veterans Day theme guides upcoming
salon discussion series at Chillicothe

By Jack Jeffery
Nov 4, 2010

Members of the campus and community will have the opportunity to discuss the challenges of returning home after battle during a conversation from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 in the casual reading area of the Stevenson Center Quinn Library at Ohio University-Chillicothe. The Veterans Day themed event is part of the salon discussion series, which allows individuals to share their insights on topics of particular relevance.

Speakers at the Nov. 10 event will include author Karen A. Patterson and psychologist Jennifer Lemkuil. Patterson’s book Allies Forever: The Life and Times of an American Prisoner of War, a memoir, is a personal account of her own family. It chronicles how World War II impacted a young bride and her husband, who was shot down during a bombing mission over Germany on Christmas Day 1944. The story describes his daily struggle to survive a prisoner-of-war camp and the challenges of returning to civilian life as not only a husband but also as a father to a child who was born while he was at war. Her parents were married only five weeks before her father was called to war, and the sudden adjustment to civilian life posed difficulties upon his return.

Lemkuil, a psychologist at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center, will share insights on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other issues facing veterans.

The event is free and open to the public. The salon discussion series at OU-C is designed to help further cultivate a sense of intellectual community with both the campus and local communities.
