Unique class project demonstrates the art of sustainability on Chillicothe Campus
An outdoor exhibit in the area between Bennett Hall and Stevenson Center shows the artistic properties of reusable items. Designed by students in an OU-C art class taught by Margaret McAdams, it combines the disciplines of both art and conservation
and shows the beauty of sustainability and preserving the planet.
The project came about as a group effort in the studio concepts class and was inspired by the efforts of Ohio University's President's Advisory Council for Sustainability Planning.
The students held discussions concerning how to present materials found on campus in an "art" context. The materials used in the project were found on campus during spring quarter or collected from the wooded area immediately behind Bennett Hall. These included aluminum cans, plastic soda bottles, cigarette butts and other commonly discarded waste items.
The installation consists of two separate but related exhibits. The first, entitled "Plastic Landscape," is the outdoor exhibit. Plastic and tin waste materials were used to create a small landscape of organic and growing forms. The second installation, "Found on Campus," is located in the gallery space at the entrance to the main hall of Quinn Library. This was ultimately conceived as an installation to bring a more selective focus and attention to the everyday presence of waste materials that are often only casually considered or completely ignored.
Students involved in the class project include Kurrie Boddorf, Rachel Bowers, Daniel Jalbuena, Marcus McGuire, Kimberly Roush, Sarah Strausbaugh and Seth Tippie.
